Bait and Switch?
Or time to cut and run?
I'm in Dallas this week, taking the accelearated VMware training course that only the self loathing would sign up for in any case. Two 32 hour classes rolled into one 50 hour week. I'm just that self abusive.
So, I'm staying at the Lincoln Center Hilton, across from the Dallas Galleria, with no rental car. The hotel offers a free, hourly shuttle to the mall. Cool, I'll go there for dinner.
I wandered around for a bit, then saw a sign for the New "Grill on the Alley", sounded interesting, so I followed the signs and found the resturant. It looked nice, and had a menu outside.
So, I checked out the menu, hmmm.... Meatloaf, that sounds good. I'll have dinner here tonight.
So, into the resturant I went, only to be handed a completely different menu, no meatloaf, and signifigantly higher prices than on the menu outside. So I called the waiter over to inquire. He then informed me that the menu outside was their Lunch menu, and that Meatloaf was not available for dinner. So I left. $18.95 for a chicken pot pie? What the hell, it better have either real pot or be served by a stripper for that price. What a crappy way to do business.
So, back into the mall I went. I wandered around some more till I found a little Mexican place by the Sakting Rink, Mi Cocina. They had a menu up, with " Tacos de Camaron", or Shrimp Tacos. I love Shrimp Tacos, so into their resturant I went.
The meal started out with some killer, hot red sauce and really thick, crunchy chips. The shrimp tacos came out and were different, with some big, grilled shrimp and fresh avacodo slices. They were delicious. I also had a killer margarita with the meal that kicked my ass, I'm glad I was taking the shuttle back to the hotel, I couldn't have driven there.
So, the night wasn't a total loss, and maybe "The Grill On The Alley" can learn something from "Mi Cocina".

Vonage - Bad service, will steal your money
Vonage - A better phone service for less
We converted to Vonage in 2005 to save money. Free long distance, free voice mail, etc.
The service has never worked as advertised, at times it has not worked well at all, and on at least two occasions we know of, the entire service was down for a day or longer and reporting our number disconnected or no longer in service.
Today was our billing date, so I decided to cancel the service. I called their support, sat on the phone for nearly half an hour, had to argue with the rep in India about how I really wanted to cancel the service and did not want to pay for another month.
She put me on hold, charged my card for the month, then came back and told me that I couldn't get a refund, but she could cancel the service, even though my account was paid till May 11, 2007.
Ok I said, then cancel my account on May 11th.
They cancelled my service today. They refuse to reactivate it or give me a refund. They apopogize for the miscommunication.
$30.77 charged to my card, no service, disconnected a month ahead of schedule.
Stinks of fraud to me. Called my charge card company, I have to wait a couple of days to protest the charge, it has to clear the bank, but I will be doing this.
In the meantime, just want to let my readers know that Vonage's service is awful, their customer reps are decietful, and they are not a good company to entrust with your business.

Scam Alert
I received several calls from Distinct Advantage from 727-683-1138 today.
Seems that they got my information from a 'partner' from whom I had made a purchase by check. I was entitled to Free Gas Vouchers and other gifts, just by verifying my checking information.
Ok, first problem with this, I don't use checks.
So I looked up Distinct Advantage Gas Voucher on Google.
There is page after page warning that this is a Scam and a Ripp-Off.
So I asked the girl, why does Google have thousands of results saying you are a scam or a rip-off?
She assured me that they were not a scam or rip-off. But she was very flustered.
So I asked, "Who referred you to me?" She did this song and dance about a valued retailer, and it could have been anything I bought, from a candy bar to a shirt.
So, I asked, "Are you going to answer my question, or is that not possible?" She asked what my question was, and I again asked, "Who referred you to me?"
She said she could not say.
So I asked, "You have thousands of Google references as being a scam, you can't tell me who referred you, and you want my bank information? Can you see why I know you are trying to rip me off?"
"What would you like me to do sir?" She asked.
I told her to remove me from their call list and never call me again. She gave me some song and dance about the company and thier website.
Wonder if they will call back...

My bad - I didn't check before bidding or accepting the 2nd chance offer to see either their feedback, or that they took PayPal.
So I sent a money order for $35 via Certified Mail, return receipt to them. Postage was $4.64, so I'm out $39.64
Got the card back in the mail, it arrived 2/10/2006.
On 2/12/2006 they filed an unpaid item complaint against me, and have been dicking with me back and forth ever since.
Today they entered an unpaid item strike, then closed their account.
Did a Google search on the address, it is a PO Box from the looks of things.
So, time to:
1. File a theft complaint with the Humble Police Department. (I live less than 50 miles away from them.)
2. File a theft/fraud complaint with the United States Postal Service. (Done 2-16-2006 online at usps.com)
3. File a complaint with the PO Box company if I can figure out who they are. Figured out who they are below.
4. Figure out where they are located for real, and pay a visit.

Ok, called the PO Box company and spoke with a Laura. I had to explain to her the nature of theft, but eventually got her to agree to have the manager call me. Later, I was called by Raul. He confirmed that the letter was received, and that it was there. However, it turns out that Ronda Strauser is a deadbeat and has not paid her bill there in quite some time. He cannot release the letter to me, and he cannot help me furher, but now I know it has not been cashed for sure, and it is not in the hands of theif Ronda Strauser.
Next call will be to the Humble Police Department or the United States Postal Service.
Late updaate: Ok, e-mailed another eBayer that had left her bad feedback. Got the lowdown that she lives in Iowa. I think I found a page with her information:

I'm used to bullies dicking me around, then being very nice when they they think someone is looking. So I don't buy the friendly response from someone's web page that consists mostly of "fuck you" and "fuck the world". Nice try though. Going to have some fun with her now.

Got an e-mail from Ronda on the undergroundworld_2006@yahoo.com askig me for my address yesterday. Didn't respond.
Now I have something in the Dispute Console on eBay saying the item was shipped. Dind't respond. But I am curious and would like an answer from eBay about how someone who is "No longer a Registered User" can log in and add content to the dispute. Maybe I'll get to that sometime today if I have a chance to get their Help Chat console up and running.

Can't explain everything right now, but I got my money order back. Removed the other company names from the post, looks like they are legitimate businesses and Ronda was the one running a fradulant business out of that location. I'll wrap up more on my other blog shortly. The short explination is that the squeaky wheel, in my case the really squeaky wheel, gets the grease.

Got an e-mail from Ronda on the undergroundworld_2006@yahoo.com askig me for my address yesterday. Didn't respond.
Now I have something in the Dispute Console on eBay saying the item was shipped. Dind't respond. But I am curious and would like an answer from eBay about how someone who is "No longer a Registered User" can log in and add content to the dispute. Maybe I'll get to that sometime today if I have a chance to get their Help Chat console up and running.

Can't explain everything right now, but I got my money order back. Removed the other company names from the post, looks like they are legitimate businesses and Ronda was the one running a fradulant business out of that location. I'll wrap up more on my other blog shortly. The short explination is that the squeaky wheel, in my case the really squeaky wheel, gets the grease.
