Serenity Movie Review
Ok, if you read this blog, you know my feelings about movies, going to the movies, and the movie studios.
So today, I made one of my rare treks to the multi-mega-plex near the house.
Went with the wife to see Serenity. Now, I had never seen the show Firefly, but I had heard the buzz about it on Slashdot. Didn't know anything about it the story, or even who was in the movie till I saw the previews. Then decided that it looked interesting. The reviews I read were good, then I heard on Slashdot that they were making the first nine minutes a free download. Didn't go watch that on purpose.
After the first nine minutes, you are filled in pretty well on the back story, and jump into the plot fairly quickly. After the first act, basically a bank robbery and escape, I thought to my self, if I go home right now, this will still be the best movie I have seen in years.
If you like great sci-fi, go see this movie. If you want a movie that is not completely predictable, is a pleasure to watch and a good escape, go see this movie. If you like hot chicks in revealing outfits, go see this movie. Hell, just go see the damn movie. It is worth the money.
I'm heading to Deep Discount DVD right now to order the Firefly series on DVD to catch up on the stuff I missed, then maybe back to the theater to see the thing again. It was that good.
Update (6:30 AM 10/10/2005):
Remembered why we didn't watch this when it first came out. The Geniuses that do programming at Fox put it up opposite Star Trek: Enterprise on UPN and Stargate: SG-1 on SciFi. This actually shows the blatant stupidity of programmers at networks. "Hey, all the sci-fi geeks watch that established show SG-1, since ours is so much better than theirs, we will run it up at the same time." Figuring that all the fans of one show will jump ship for something new and unproven is just plain stupid. The most annoying part of this is that all three are good shows, and had they been left not opposite each other on three networks, possibly all three, instead of one of the three, would still be on at this time.
