A historical question...

Ok, this is an odd thought, but I was wondering today.

Was World War I called World War I before World War II?

Or was it just refered to as The World War?

Or, was it called something completely different?

Comments:
Mostly it was call the "Great War" or the war in Europe. I'm not sure that the term World War was in widespread use until during the second one.
