Exchange 2000 16GB Message Store Size Limit

Exchange 2000 is causing multiple, repeated events in the log because the information store has gotten too large. They are not all identical to the one below, but the only variance is the Event ID or Imbedded Error Code:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: ESE
Event Category: Space Management
Event ID: 445
Date: 4/27/2005
Time: 6:01:36 PM
User: N/A
Computer: billgatesisevil
Description:
Information Store (3788) The database D:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata\priv1.edb has reached its maximum size of 16382 MB. If the database cannot be restarted, an offline defragmentation may be performed to reduce its size.
For more information, click http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp.

We attempted to perform an temporary increase of the Database by 1GB as per Microsoft TechNet KB article 813051. This did not work and the errors continued.

Called Microsoft Support. The tech laughed and said that KB 813051 hardly ever works.

First we verified that there was a good tape backup of Exchagne from the previous evening.

Second we disabled Virus Scan.

Next we dismounted the Message Store in Exchange System Manager.

From the command line, we then checked the integrity of the Public and Private databases:

d:\\exeutil /mh "\path\priv1.edb"
d:\\exeutil /mh "\path\pub1.edb"

Note the file names are the defaults for Exchange 2000.

After the integrity was verified, we made a flat file backup of the databases by copying the .edb and .stm files to another drive.

Next, from the command line, we ran the Database Derfagment utility on both the Public and Private databases. According to Microsoft this can take 4-5 hours to compelete on 16GB of data. It took us about 2.5 hours.

d:\\exeutil /d "\path\priv1.edb"
d:\\exeutil /d "\path\pub1.edb"

While the defrag was running, we copied all the current log files into a "Backup Logs" directory.

Once the defragmentation was completed we remounted the store and tested. Everything was working fine. The compression appears to have gained us about 1GB of free space.

The next step is to begin removing unnecessary e-mails and archiving e-mails that are old but need to be retained.

Not willing to work for absurdly low wages? Talented? Out of work? Microsoft wants to bring in workers from other countries. Thanks Bill.

Mutton Bone - The Inflatable Sheep Company

This could be a sign that the end of the world is near.

It could also be a sign that I am going to be the Best Man at a very good friends wedding this summer up in Amarillo, TX.

It could just be a sign that I have way too much free time on my hands some days.

Surveillance Works Both Ways

I like to find the security cameras in stores. I never thought of taking pictures or video of them, I just like to do strange things in front of them, just in case someone is watching. You know, make it look like I'm a shoplifter, rearrange the merchandise on the shelf, throw the merchandise on the floor, touch myself, anything to make the video more interesting for someone who might be watching.

Wonder if I could get a T-Shirt with a camera bubble installed that says "I'm watching you."...

Want a day that completely sucks?

Ok, I have a Server assembled in Austin, TX, with a tape drive that was assembled somewhere in the Far East, with an operating system written in Redmond, Watshington, USA and backup software from France.

Now I'm getting tech support from India (see link below) and wondering why we are paying $89 for the pleasure of someone incomprehensible on the other end of the line.

Dell - More Sucky Customer Service

Ok, we got a nice, new 72GB Tape Drive from Dell for one of our customers. The thing lists at $899.00, see the link below.

It was DOA. Would not compress the backup jobs. So we called to get a new drive for the customer. Today the drive arrives.

Stamped nice and big on the box, "REFURBISHED". Great, now I'm going to get my ass chewed by the boss, the customer is still without a NEW part, even though they have been billed already, and I'm further behind on the project.

Now I'm talking with some jackass in India about why they couldn't get someone in Austin to ship us the right part. This is stupid. With all the time I've wasted on the phone with support, I could have driven to the Dell warehouse in Austin and got a new drive myself.

Wonder what I can do to get Inda and Pakistan really pissed off at each other, so they nuke themselves out of existance and Tech Support can move back to the good old USA...

Man Arrested for Using $2 Bills at Best Buy

Ok, I go to best buy because they are cheap, near my house, and better than Circuit City.

But I guess I'm going to have to start paying with $2 bills.

I wonder what kind of lawsuit this will generate for him?

More Health Problems

Found out today that I have another problem since the Coma. I'm now infertile. My boys ain't swimming like they used to swim. And I know they were good before the Coma because I had them checked out in late 2002 or early 2003. Don't remember the exact time, but I had plenty of healthy little siwmmers back then.

Time to call the lawyer and throw another log on the medical malpractice fire.
